What does a candy company and the Final Fantasy VII Remake have in common? Some sweet equipment rewards, and a dynamic PS4 theme, apparently.

In an email sent out today, Square Enix has announced that players can earn a Dynamic Tifa Theme, as well as up to 5 DLC equipment items for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake game, by purchasing specific qualifying candy bars and uploading a picture of your receipt to https://butterfingerff7r.com/.

Having participated fully in the promotion, here’s what the entire process was like for us, start to finish. Read on if you were interested in taking part in this DLC Offer!

Note: We do not intend for this post to be a comprehensive guide on the promotional offer, and are not representing, endorsed by, or affiliated with the companies and agencies involved in the promotion. We just want to show you what to expect!

Important Information about the Promo Offer

Before you start to participate in the promo, please read everything we’ve written in this section below, including the Eligibility and Regionality, Promotional Period, Prizes, and How to Participate sections. These were all written using the Official Rules as reference, and we’d hate for you to be misinformed about the promo offer!

We’ll start with the eligibility requirements first.

Eligibility and Regionality

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but international readers, this promo is active in the United States only. Please do not follow any of the steps below if you are located outside of the United States.

You must also be at least age 13 or older to participate. Per the official rules, the promo is “Open only to Legal Residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, who are 13 years of age or older at the time of qualifying purchase. Void where prohibited or restricted by law, valid while supplies last.”

You must not be involved in any way with the organizations who organize and hold the promo, nor must you be an immediate family member or live in the same household as a person who is is involved with those organizations. (Please see the full eligibility section outlined in the Official Rules for more details.)

If you are in the United States, there’s a few other important clarifications we need to address.

Promotional Period

If you’re wanting to participate in the offer, the promo offer begins on March 3rd, 2020, at 12:00PM Eastern Time, and ends on May 14, 2020, at 11:59:59PM Eastern Time.

However, there are a limited quantity of in-game offers available. We’ll cover this shortly, but if you are interested in participating in the offer, its better to do so as soon as possible.

Prizes and the Tier System

As mentioned in the email offer, (and originally, this tweet), if you buy at least 2 qualifying candy bars, you can start earning in-game DLC, as well as the highly coveted Tifa Dynamic theme for the PS4.

These are the Midgar Bangle, Shinra Bangle, Corneo Armlet, Superstar Belt, and Mako Crystal equipment items, and while this is true, there’s a slight catch; it isn’t as clear cut as it sounds.

The rewards are actually split up into a 5-tier system, where every 2 qualifying candy bars purchased will move you up to the next tier, until you reach the 5th tier.

This means that purchasing 2 candy bars will only get you one piece of DLC.

Fortunately, so long as you use the same email address to “log-in” to the promo site again, your current tier is saved, and new purchases will count towards your next tier as well.

There’s also an important caveat, however; you must purchase the bars in sets of two, in the same transaction, for them to be counted. This comes directly from the official rules itself.

So, as an example, let’s say you want to get all 5 DLC items. You buy 2 qualifying bars in one purchase, 5 in a different purchase, and 3 in a third purchase. 2+5+3=10, which is the cumulative total of bars you normally would need to buy.

However, because only sets/multiples of 2 are counted in a transaction, you’ll only be at tier 4, with 2 bars being counted for the first purchase, 4 counted for the second, and another 2 counted on the last. Those other two individual bars, since they were not purchased together, do not count towards your tier, so you’d have to buy another two bars in the same transaction.

Lastly, the amount of DLC being given away seems to be limited.

According to the official rules, there are 100,000 Midgar Bangle Codes, 50,000 Shinra Bangle and Corneo Armlet codes, and 25,000 Superstar Belt and Mako Crystal Codes.

While the numbers seem low, don’t let that stop you from giving the promo a try! As of May 1st, 2020, we were able to get every DLC offer. And we’ve typed up exactly what we did to redeem them.

To put it all together, here’s a table of the tier and prizes for the promo, similar to the one in the Official Rules.

Qualifying Purchase Tier Number of Cumulative Products Offer Item (awarded as a digital code) Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) Number of Offer Items Available
1 2 Midgar Bangle, Tifa Dynamic Theme (emailed separately) $1.99 100,000
2 4 Shinra Bangle $1.99 50,000
3 6 Corneo’s Armlet $1.99 50,000
4 8 Superstar Belt $1.99 25,000
5 10 Mako Crystal $1.99 25,000

How to Participate

Participating in the event is relatively easy. You’ll just have to go to https://butterfingerff7r.com/ to begin the promo! However, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

As mentioned in the above section, you must purchase at least two participating products, in the same transaction, during the offer period. This means that any purchases made before or after the promo offer will not qualify.

However, you will only get DLC from purchases made in sets of/pairs of two, (2, 4, 6, 8, 10), meaning, if you buy 5 products in one transaction, and buy another 5 in a different transaction, you will only get 4 of the 5 items, as only two pairs were purchased on each reciept.

As for the participating products, these have to be any 2 of the following:

  • A 1.9oz or 3.7oz Butterfinger Bar
  • A 1.55oz or 2.75oz Crunch Bar
  • A 1.9oz, 2.1oz, 3.3oz, or 3.7oz Baby Ruth Bar

If you don’t know if the candy bar you’re about to buy meets these eligibility requirements, just look on the wrapper! You should see the Net Weight written below the candy name.

The candy bars also will not have any promotional packaging, so please make sure you are buying the specific bars listed from the qualifying items page.

Once you’ve purchased the bars and received your receipt, hold onto it, and do not throw it away until after you receieve your emails with the redemption codes.

We’ll cover how to submit your reciept(s) step-by-step below.

Butterfinger Promo Site Steps:

The following steps are to be done from the official promo site, https://butterfingerff7r.com/.

We are not involved in the promotion, and do not issue the rewards. You must complete the steps listed below on the official site!

Step 1: Enter your email address

This step is simple and self-explanatory, but it’s also one of the most important steps in the process.

Because the email entered here is used to send you your DLC code emails, as well as keep track of how many qualifying purchases you’ve made, you must use this same email address for the entire promotional offer.

It should also go without saying, but make sure you have access to the email address you enter, and that you remember it!

Step 2: Register using your info. (One-time only)

For this next step, you’ll have to register to completely set up your email for the promotion.

All this form asks for is your first and last name, and your birthday.

There’s also a checkbox that requires you to agree to the promotion’s privacy policy, as well as read and agree to the official rules. I strongly encourage you to actually read through both of the links, so you know what to expect, and how your data is being used.

Once done with that, enter the captcha you see (or hear) into the captcha box, and you’ll move onto step 3.

Step 3: Upload your Receipt

This step is fairly simple, but if you’re completing the process on a desktop computer, you’ll need a way to transfer your picture from a phone or camera onto your computer.  If you have a Google account (used for Gmail, YouTube, etc…), Google Drive is a free solution that’ll allow you to backup and download your files from the cloud.

Besides transferring it, there are also some important rules and restrictions in place regarding your picture.

According to the official rules, your picture…:

  • Must be in a .JPEG, .JPG, .PNG, or GIF format
  • Must NOT exceed a file size of 8MB
  • Must show where you purchased a pair or pairs of qualifying bars, in the same transaction
  • Must be clear, and the purchase date must be visible on the receipt.

Don’t worry if you aren’t sure how your picture will look right away; you’ll be given time to review your uploaded picture, so make sure your receipt is legible!

Another tip for your receipt submission? Try to have the candy bars visible in the photo you sibmit.

While the official rules do not state that you have to include the candy bars in your picture, people have found that having the candy bars visible tends to have their submission approved. We personally did the same, and had no issues with submission.

If you’re happy with how the upload came out, and believe it meets the above guidelines, you’ll have to certify that you are the owner of the receipt, and will submit the receipt if asked.

Do not throw away your receipt yet. If there are problems validating the receipt, you may be asked to submit another picture of it, so it’s better to hold onto your proof of purchase until AFTER you get your codes.

Click the finished button when ready, and you’ll then move onto the last step of the process.

Step 4: Wait for Verification

If you’ve gotten past the other steps, there’s nothing you can do for now except wait for your image to be verified.

As of now, because of how popular the promotion is, the verification process can take anywhere from 3 to 5 business days, so you’ll have to be patient!

If your image and receipt pass verification, you should receive further emails with your DLC Code(s). If not, chances are likely you’ll need to wait for a rejection email with further steps.

While your receipt is being verified, DO NOT resubmit the same receipt again. Doing so may be seen as a breach of the official rules if the image does qualify the first time.

Also, if you have not made a full 10 qualifying purchases on your submission, you will have to wait until the next day to submit another receipt in. According to the official rules, “Each participant may upload one (1) receipt per day…” and,

“[a] ‘Day’ is defined as each calendar day of the Offer Period, running from 12:00:01 am ET to 11:59:59 pm ET, except for the first day of the Offer Period, which shall begin at 12:00:00 pm ET.”, meaning that you’ll have to wait until Midnight of the following day to submit a new receipt.

If this is the case for you, you’ll need to go back to the promo website the next day, and re-enter your email address, where you’ll then be prompted to upload a new receipt.

Next, we’ll show you how to redeem your download codes from the playstation store, and how to redeem your DLC in-game.

Redeeming Your Codes

So, you’ve read up on the rules, bought your qualifying items in pairs, gotten your reciept approved, and recieved emails containing your DLC codes. What’s next? Redeeming your codes!

The following steps assume you are redeeming from your PS4 directly.

1. Sign into/create a [US] Playstation Account

If you already have a Playstation 3, Vita, or Playstation 4, chances are likely that you may already have a user profile with a Playstation Account linked to it. Sign into your account first.

If you do not have a Playstation Account, but currently have a user profile, you will be prompted to sign into or make a Playstation Account when accessing any of the features on the upper home screen menu.

If you don’t have a user profile or a Playstation Account, you can add a new user and do both during the setup process.

Whichever of these ways you choose to do it, you’re now set to go to the Playstation Store for the next step.

2. Navigate to the Redemption Tab in the Playstation Store

If you haven’t already, sign in with a user profile, and launch the Playstation Store from the Home menu. The Playstation Store Icon should be all the way to the left of the menu.

Next, from inside the Playstation Store, scroll all the way to the bottom, and select the “Redeem Codes” tab. This will be the second-to-last tab of the Playstation Store.

3. Enter your Redemption Code

Once you’ve selected the “Redeem Codes” tab, you’ll be taken to a single page with a text box.

Type in a redemption code you receieved from the promotion, and then press continue.

You’ll then see a short screen showing your redemption item, with an option to confirm the redemption, or cancel it. Select “confirm”.

4. Download the Item / Enter More Codes

Once you’ve confirmed your redemption, congrats! The downloadable content is yours and is now tied to your Playstation Account.

Unfortunately, the redeemed item won’t be downloaded just yet.

You can either choose the “Continue” option to download and review your new content, or choose “Enter Another Code” to return back to step 3.

If you choose the option to continue, leaving the screen will take you back to the main page of the Playstation Store, so you’ll have to navigate back if you have more codes to redeem.

If you choose to enter more codes, you’ll need to go to the Library app on the PS4, and download your content that way.

The library will be the last app on the right of your Home menu. You’ll need to go to select the Final Fantasy VII Remake from the list of installed games, and from there,  install all of the DLC you want added.

Caught up with redeeming your DLC codes? Great! Next, we’ll show you how to claim your new DLC in-game.

Claiming your DLC In-Game

Claiming your in-game content is by far the easiest part of the process. All you really have to do is navigate a menu and claim your items! Here’s how:

1. Once you’ve downloaded the DLC for the Remake onto your PS4, launch the game.

Before you reach the main menu, you should see a screen notifying you that “Additional content has been downloaded.”

If you do not see this screen, double-check that your DLC has been installed by going to the Library from the Home menu, and verify that the installed content is listed in the “Final Fantasy VII Remake”.

2. Load or create save data for the game

You won’t be able to access the DLC content from the main menu, so load up a save game of choice, or create brand new save data. It doesn’t matter which of these you do, as the DLC can be redeemed once per save game.

Then, when you get access to the pause menu, press the “OPTIONS” button on your PS4 controller to open the pause menu. This leads us to the final step.

3. Go to the “System” tab of the pause menu, and select “DLC” from the options listed.

Just as it sounds, pause your game with the “Options” button on your controller, and navigate to the “System” menu. Then, go to “DLC” from the options listed.

Here, you’ll see a list of all of your downloaded DLC for the game. Simply press “X” on each item you’re interested in redeeming. There are no in-game requirements to claim them, so claim away!

DLC Overview: In-Game

If I had to describe the DLC for the promotion in one phrase, the best phrase that comes to mind is “defensive-based”.

All of the DLC items provide some form of added defense to a character. Whether in raw stat boosts (the bangles), or with unique abilities (Belt/Crystal), these equipment pieces won’t necessarily break the game, or make your character overpowered. They’re all balanced fairly well.

Generally speaking, though, the bangle items can work well until mid-game, offering higher than usual defense boosts up to then, but likely won’t see much use afterwards.

The last two items, the Superstar Belt and the Mako Crystal, are the best of the offer, maintaining usefulness at any point of the game.

With the Mako Crystal, you’ll get increased elemental resistance from all main element types.

The Superstar Belt functions as a permanent set of Earrings, protecting the wearer from being incapacitated, without the unfortunate side-effect of breaking after its use.

Mako Crystal: A beautiful crystal imbued with mako. [Reduces fire, ice, lightning, and wind damage taken.] (No stat boosts)

Superstar Belt: A belt declaring one’s status as a superstar. [Avoid incapacitation once per battle.  Does not work against instant death attacks or when HP is at 1.] (No stat boosts)

Corneo Armlet: A tacky bangle bearing the don’s mark. [22 Magic Def and Def, two linked materia slots.]

Shinra Bangle: A sleek bangle engraved with the Shinra company logo. [20 Magic Def and Def, two unlinked materia slots.]

Midgar Bangle: A bangle designed in the image of the great city of Midgar. [18 Magic Def and Def, one materia slot.]

Conclusion

We were able to claim all of the DLC offers at the start of May, so there might still be a chance to get everything! But what did you think of the process?

If you participated, did you enjoy getting the Tifa Dynamic Theme? And which in-game DLC item do you like most?

Let’s discuss in the comments below!
